Letter Carriers Kick-off Nation’s Largest Single Day Food Drive
To Help Stamp Out Hunger

Americans have donated more than one billion pounds of food over the past 18 years during the Stamp Out Hunger food drive, but the need now has never been greater. On Saturday, May 14, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will not only deliver the mail, they will be picking up food to Stamp Out Hunger across America in order to provide assistance to the one in six Americans who struggle with hunger.

Now in its 19th year, the Stamp Out Hunger effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. Organizers hope to exceed last year’s record-setting total of 77.1 million pounds of donated food. Every home in America is encouraged to help by simply leaving a bag of non-perishable food items like soup, canned vegetables and fruits, pasta, cereal or rice, near their mailbox. The nation’s 230,000 letter carriers will do the rest, by collecting the donations in more than 10,000 cities and towns across the country and delivering them to food banks and other hunger relief organizations.

In these difficult economic times the need for food assistance has never been greater. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture, the number of Americans living in food insecure homes increased to more than 50 million in 2009. Perhaps most alarming, of this total, nearly one in three is a child.

As part of its ongoing hunger relief efforts, Campbell Soup Company is once again partnering with the letter carriers and will produce a reminder postcard that the U.S. Postal Service delivers to more than 80 million homes the week of the drive. In addition, Campbell will donate one pound of food (up to one million pounds) to Feeding America for every person who joins the Stamp Out Hunger Facebook Cause, pledging their support to ending hunger in America.
